Our Curriculum: Infants (6 weeks – 18 months)
Learning starts at birth, and in the Highlands Academy Infant Room, our teachers are not just attending to your child’s physical and emotional needs. They are planning and carrying out activities based upon each child’s developmental level. Even before the babies can sit up by themselves, they are included in Circle Time, where teachers sing songs and read books to them. Everything is new to a child, and we encourage exploration of the world around them. We start teaching sign language in the infant room. This allows our babies to use simple sign language to communicate their needs, long before they acquire the verbal language skills to do so.

Our Curriculum: Toddlers (18 months – 3 years)
The Toddler Room is a very busy place. Besides working very seriously on potty training, we have lots of activities going on. Circle Time happens daily, and includes singing, reading stories, learning to count and recognize written numbers, singing the alphabet and recognizing written letters, and recognizing colors and shapes. We continue to work on our sign language, and we are learning some Spanish words as well. You’ll see lots of art projects happening in the toddler room, as well as dramatic play, sensory, and large motor activities (to exercise those fast-growing large muscles). At this age we work a lot on social skills, helping our toddlers learn to share, and teaching appropriate ways of handling their emotions.

Our Curriculum: Preschool (3 – 5 years)
At Highlands Academy, our teachers take pride in providing an environment rich in learning opportunities for your child. Each day is full of planned activities and Circle Times which will encourage the children to discover and learn from their world. Our curriculum includes plenty of hands-on experiences that will spur each child’s readiness for reading, math, science, and art. Creativity is nurtured, and social skills are improved upon. Children in this age group are learning to be independent, and this is encouraged as the children learn to self-serve at meal times, take care of their belongings, be responsible for materials, use the bathroom on their own, and wash their hands thoroughly.

Our School-Age Program Highlands Academy provides Before & After School care, complete with breakfast, snack, and transportation to and from Fredstrom Elementary. After school, you’ll find our kids working on their homework, playing games or doing crafts with their friends, and getting some exercise outside. They especially love doing science experiments, and helping their teachers with classroom tasks. Our summer school-age program is packed with fun, including two field trips each week. We take lots of pictures, which each child uses to create their own scrapbook that goes home with them at the end of summer. Of course, summer care isn’t just about the school-agers experiencing all that our community has to offer. We also bring entertainment into the daycare for all the kids to enjoy, such as a magic show, a puppet show, storytellers, The Bug Guy, and the Capital City Cloggers, to name a few. There’s also Bike Days, Water Days, and maybe even a visit from Kona Ice.
